Getting your car windows tinted is one of the best upgrades for comfort and UV protection. However, it's crucial to know the legal limits in your state to avoid fines, defect notices, or even issues with your insurance.

In Australia, tint darkness is measured by its VLT (Visible Light Transmission)—the percentage of light the film allows to pass through. A lower VLT means a darker tint.

Here’s a breakdown of the current laws for passenger vehicles across Australia.

Windscreen: Same Rule Everywhere

The rules for the front windscreen are universal across all states:

  • Only the top 10% of the windscreen can have a tinted band.

Side and Rear Windows: State-by-State Rules

This is where things differ.

  • NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA & TAS:

    • Front Side Windows (driver and front passenger): Must have a VLT of at least 35%.

    • Rear Side & Rear Windows (all glass behind the driver): Can be darker, with a minimum VLT of 20%.

  • Western Australia (WA):

    • Front Side Windows: Minimum VLT of 35%.

    • All glass behind the driver: Minimum VLT of 20%.

  • Northern Territory (NT):

    • Front Side Windows: Minimum VLT of 35%.

    • All glass behind the driver: Can be darker, with a minimum VLT of 15%.

Why Do These Laws Exist?

These regulations are for safety. Law enforcement needs to be able to see into a vehicle, and the driver must maintain clear visibility, especially at night.
